The Friendly and Relaxed Way           to Visit Namibia

EIGHT DAY CENTRAL AND COASTAL TOUR

Day 1
Meet you at the airport and take you to a good guest house in Windhoek. Depending on your time of arrival, the rest of the day is yours to relax or to see some of the sights of Windhoek. Pieter will be at your service at all times. Maybe go out to dinner in the evening at one of the good restaurants in town.

Day 2
Leave after breakfast and drive through the Khomas Hochland via the impressive Spreetshoogte pass and the aptly named little settlement, Solitiare, to a wonderful guest farm, south of the Naukluft mountains. The owner is one of only two wine makers in Namibia (the other one lives in Omaruru, where we hail from) and you will be able to decide for yourself how his wine compares to your national wines. Allan is very enthusiastic about the wine, the area and all things related to Namibia and all our previous visitors have loved their stay here. Depending how you feel, you can either accompany Allan on a tour of the small vineyard (optional extra) which is fed by no less than five overflowing fountains in this dry and seemingly inhospitable terrain, or you can just spend the afternoon relaxing. If fully booked, we will stay at another good lodge or guest farm in the vicinity. If, however, you would prefer to stay at an up-market lodge, then there are several to choose from in this vicinity.

Day 3
Leave very early in the morning and drive down to Sossusvlei where you will see some of the highest and most spectacular dune scenery in the world – a photographer’s paradise. Visit Sesriem Canyon on the way back. We will take breakfast, lunch and refreshments with us, as is done every day of the trip, and we will return to the farm before it gets too hot, so that you can spend a relaxing afternoon, doing whatever you wish. 

From here our guests can also undertake either a mid-afternoon or an early morning flight (optional extra) across the Namib desert via Sossusvlei, down to the cold Atlantic coast where desert and ocean meet, and then back again via the beautiful dune and mountain landscape in the vicinity of Namib Rand Nature reserve. One has no idea of how large and how spectacularly beautiful this ancient desert is, and a such flight helps to put everything into perspective. The pilot is very experienced and has been flying around this area longer than anybody else, so he knows it like the back of his hand. This flight can either be undertaken during the afternoon or just after sunrise the next day, because then the dunes are at their best.

Day 4
After an early breakfast (or after the early morning flight), leave for Swakopmund via Solitaire (the most aptly named settlement in Namibia - famous for the farm shop and Moose’s apple pie!) and the gravel plains of the Namib Desert Park. On the way we will visit the Kuiseb Canyon Viewpoint, where two German geologist hid out for almost three years during WW II because they wanted nothing to do with the war (read “The Sheltering Desert” ISBN 0 86852 150 7 by Henno Martin). Travel further westwards through the ever more barren desert, stopping off to look at the strange Welwitschia plants which only occur in Namibia and southern Angola and nowhere else in the world. Shortly before getting to Swakopmund stop again to view the stark Moon Landscape which was also formed by water in the desert. Book into a charming guesthouse or one of the up-market hotels (whichever you prefer) in Swakopmund. Dinner at a good local restaurant.

Day 5
After breakfast, drive 30 km south to the harbour town of Walvis Bay where you will go on a most interesting dolphin cruise around the bay. Visitors are assured of seeing Cape fur seals (some of which jump up onto the boat), often two different species of dolphins, and if very lucky, maybe a whale or two, as well as many different species of sea birds, including flamingos and pelicans. A delicious lunch consisting of sea food and light snacks is served on board the boat. Those who do not wish to go on the boat trip, can choose an exploration excursion to discover the wonders of the desert – most people are amazed at the variety and amount of living creatures to be found in the desert. 

The afternoon is yours to do as you wish. There is plenty to do and see in Swakopmund, because it is a very charming little late 19th century “German” town, set on the desert coast of Africa and everything is within easy walking distance. Spend another night at the same guest house and have dinner at a different restaurant.

Day 6
Leave Swakopmund and travel north to visit the huge Cape fur seal colony at Cape Cross (one of the largest on the African continent), and also have a look at replicas of the padrão which the Portuguese explorer, Diogo Cão, planted there in 1486 during his journeys of exploration down the west African coast.

From here, travel via the Brandberg (the highest mountain in Namibia) and the villages of Uis and Omaruru to one of the lodges (or hotel) close to Omaruru. Go for a game drive or walk in the late afternoon. Dinner at the lodge.

Day 8
Leave for Windhoek after breakfast. If time allows, do some last minute sight seeing or shopping before Pieter takes you to the Okakara airport, some 30 km out of town to board your flight home. 


The price of the tour will depend upon the number of guests and will be forwarded to you beforehand. It will include the following : 
 ° All transport in an air-conditioned Combi fitted with a fridge; 
 ° Driver/guide with extensive experience; 
 ° All accommodation; 
 ° All meals; 
 ° Refreshments (excluding alcoholic drinks) 
 ° Water in the vehicle; 
 ° Entrance fees 
 ° 15% VAT 

Only tips, laundry and alcohol / drinks at the table are excluded. Thus the only extra money you need to bring is what you wish to spend on yourself.
