Namibia is a truly fascinating and safe African country with wide open spaces, beautiful scenery, plenty of game, interesting people and it has some of the best infrastructure and services in Africa. There is a well-established road network of which some 5 450 km is tarred and 37 000 km consists of good gravel and earth roads, providing access to the majority of towns, parks, nature reserves and tourist attractions in the country.
Namibia has one of the best doctor/patient ratios in Africa. In Windhoek there are three world-class private hospitals and two state hospitals, each with fully equipped and maintained intensive-care units as well as an excellent med-rescue service to isolated areas in case of emergencies while there are doctors' practices in most of the smaller towns. The qualifications of medical prcationers are up to world standards and there are also many different specialists working in Windhoek, where 90% of emergency cases can be treated. We have a good postal and telecommunications service and standard telephone services are available to any country in the world. Cell phones (mobiles) operate in all major towns, but contact is not available in some of the more remote areas.
Good quality shops and restaurants are well represented in the larger towns while the lodges, guest farms/houses and hotels in the more remote areas also offer good food and very comfortable and clean accommodation. Lunches, water and light refreshments will be taken with us wherever we travel and it is interesting to know that in Namibia all the tap water is potable, but bottled water can be bought throughout the country.
The local currency is the Namibian Dollar (N$) and it is linked on a 1: 1 basis to the S.A. Rand (ZAR) which is also legal tender anywhere in the country. We have an efficient banking sector and most of the major credit cards are acceptable.
